| Pangenitor -- THE MANIC ONE-MAN BAND [self-released] [Non Servitum Records] | |||||||||||||||||
Pangenitor, as you may have cleverly deduced from the cd's title, is -- wait for it -- a one-man band. Yes. Really. The man in question is one Pucca Pangenitor (I'm going to go out on limb here and guess that this was perhaps not the name they wrote on his birth certificate), and he plays... gadgets. A wee sparrow tells me he started out playing an out-of-tune toy accordion and a kazoo / slide whistle, a thought that fills me with complete and total fear, but now he settles for stuff like drum machines, samplers, pianos, synths, and a diabolical devil-machine known as the "Cackle Clang Toot Rattle Thumpomatic." Be afraid... be very afraid, my trembling little maggots. Here...let me... strap you in... yes... TIGHTER... as we... put... the... cd... on.... (pause for diabolical laughter) So on the cd, what he does is this: he'll start with a figure on one instrument, then start up a loop, then another instrument, then so on, back and forth, like a rockin' rhythm bobblehead stabbing away at one instrument after the next. In the process he unleashes some truly demented sounds, all enslaved by the devil clown beat. He gets some truly freakish noises out of his gadgets, oh yes he does... even as he calls up devil-rhythms so irresistible that you will have to tie your legs down to save your soul. Perhaps he is the Hasil Adkins of electronica, a wildman with more modern instruments but equally primitive urges? It is not for us to know. The Pangenitor is a secretive one, down to hiding all the song titles, but they are not necessary to wallow in the beat. I'll bet he's most entertaining to watch live. Bonus points for the insanely cool logo. |
